Teaching

Elizabeth Shepherd is a part-time lecturer in Archives and Records Management in the School of Library, Archive and Information Studies at University College London. From 1992-2002 she was programme tutor for the MA in Archives and Records Management.

Teaching activity: teaches and assesses MA modules in principles of archives and records management, records management and management skills. Successful professional accreditation of MA by Society of Archivists (1993, 1995, 2001). Development of learning materials through a project into distance education and continuing professional development funded by HEFCE Continuing Vocational Education(1995-97); a BLRDD-funded project to prepare a video on key issues in managing electronic records (1995-96); development phase of rm3, commissioned by the Public Record Office for government records staff; inter-departmental project at UCL on teamworking and project management (1996-97). Development of flexible provision of learning through the delivery of the MA part-time on-site at the Public Record Office (1995-97); UCL Working Party on Modular Masters (1994-95) to draft a framework for UCL and piloting of the framework on two MA programmes (ARM and RAMI); open and distance learning templates (Education and Professional Development secondment, 2002-03).

Research

Her research interests are in the management of electronic records and archives and in the development of the British archival profession, including professional education. Research projects include: the application of ISAD(G) to the description of datasets (1999, AHRB); mapping descriptive standards across domains (ISAD(G) and SPECTRUM) (2000, British Academy); metadata requirements of ISAD(G) and ISO 15489 (2002, British Academy); E-Term (European Training in Electronic Records Management) (2000-01, EC Leonardo da Vinci fund). Supervisor to PhD students and MA student theses.

Recent publications include articles on descriptive standards and electronic records management. She is joint author with Geoffrey Yeo of Managing Records: a handbook of principles and practice (Facet Publishing, 2003).

Professional activities

She has been on the organising committees for short courses and conferences including a 5 day international conference on the management of electronic information (June 1994), 3 days on business process analysis (April 1996) and a 2 week course for Chinese urban construction archivists (June 1996) and the Society of Archivists' annual conference hosted jointly by the PRO and UCL (September 1997).

She is an active professional, who is currently a member of the Lord Chancellor's Advisory Council on Public Records, Press and Publicity Officer for the National Council on Archives, a member of the ICA Training Committee and the BSI Committee for an international records management standard (IDT2/17). She works as an archives and records management consultant to overseas governments and to British commercial and voluntary organisations.

Previous experience

Before joining UCL, Elizabeth was at Task Force Pro Libra Ltd., where she was a recruitment and training consultant with a special interest in the services offered by TFPL to records managers and archivists. Elizabeth originally trained as an archivist and worked for a number of years in local government, including Essex County Council, as an archivist and records manager. Further details of career
