Research
Students Group (RSG)
General
Information
The
Research Students Group (RSG) was established at the beginning of the
1995/96 Session to fulfill the following objectives:
- to
provide an academic framework for a programme each session of seminars
to be presented by individual postgraduate research students
- to
act as a support group to reduce the feelings of isolation and frustration
inherent in research
- to
promote interaction between the research students themselves, and with
the staff and students of the School.
The Group is co-ordinated by Ms Jennifer Hogarth. Ms Hogarth is
the School's Senior Research Fellow. She may be contacted at any time
by e-mail, by 'phone on 020 8868
8946, by fax on 020 8868 7021, through the School by leaving a message
on 020 7679 7204, or by putting a note in her staff tray in the School's
Office.

Membership
All
research graduates registered in the School for the Ph.D., M.Phil., and
M.Res. degrees automatically become members of
the Group. No additional registration or subscription is required.
The Group comprises researchers in the fields of library, archive, and
information science, including electronic publishing and communication
.
Details of name, addresses, date of registration and type of research
degree are kept on the College and the School's student databases. In
addition, the School keeps a record of the titles of theses of past and
current students.
If the details of registration or personal situation, particularly a term
address, should change during the Session, the School’s Office should
be informed immeadiately. This is particularly important whenever a student
is obliged to leave the United Kingdom for personal reasons or in the
course of field work. In this case a forwarding address should be left
with Ms Kerstin Michaels, the School's Administrative Officer,
either by 'phone on +44 020 7679 7024 or by e-mail.

Programme
At
present two seminars are presented each term. They take place at 5.30
p.m. on a Thursday during term. The venue is notified in advance. A list
of the titles of past seminars may be viewed.
The seminars are open to the School's staff and students and to invited
visitors from outside SLAIS or UCL. Research students are urged to support
their peer group and attend as many of the seminars as they can. In this
way, a suitable audience can provide a stimulating and useful discussion.
The
details of each presentation, together with any other relevant information
and events, are posted up on the Group’s own notice board in the first
floor corridor of the School. In addition, individual members are informed
by e-mail or post to their home/term address. Notices will also appear
on all the other noticeboards in the School. Research students are asked
to send confirmation/apologies for each seminar direct to Ms. Hogarth..
Each presentation lasts approximately one hour (20-30 minute paper followed
by questions and discussion from the floor).
Research
students wishing to give a seminar paper should notify Ms. Hogarth,
giving her the title, date preferred, and a copy of the abstract (summary)
for circulation beforehand and for posting on the RSG Web page which details
the current term's programme. Adequate notice
should be given to ensure a room booking and to enable the information
to be circulated to other members of the Group and to the staff and students
of the School.
Occasionally
seminars are given by visiting researchers from elsewhere in the United
Kingdom or abroad.

Additional
Information
The
information contained in these pages is also available in an information
leaflet which is given to each research student as (s)he joins the School.
In addition, students are given a copy of the School's Graduate Programmes
handbook with the names of the staff and outlines of various courses.
A series of more detailed handbooks is available from the School's office.
Facilties for research students who wish to work in UCL are provided by
the School in Room H4 in Hut 34 (along the path between the Gordon Square
houses and the Medawar building). The key may be collected from the School's
Office, but at the same time please check that the room is free since
it is also used for small group teaching.
Appointments to see supervisors should be made directly with the supervisor
concerned. Failure to keep an appointment should, as a matter of courtesy,
be notified as soon as possible. For any further information, please contact
either Ms Hogarth or Ms Michaels.
