I am Professor of Dutch and Comparative Literature at University College London (UCL).

I am Head of Department and Graduate Tutor in the Department of Dutch, and Director of the Centre for Intercultural Studies. I act as convener of the MA programmes in Comparative Literature and in Translation Theory and Practice.

I also head the inter-university Virtual Dutch initiative and serve as an editor of the journal Dutch Crossing.

Beyond UCL I am involved in the Translation Research Summer School (TRSS) and with the International Association for Translation and Intercultural Studies (IATIS). I also edit the book series Translation Theories Explored for St Jerome Publishing (Manchester).

I have published on translation theory and history, and on Dutch and comparative literature. Monographs include The Structure of Modernist Poetry (1982), Translation in Systems (1999) and The Conference of the Tongues (2007). I am the editor of The Manipulation of Literature: Studies in Literary Translation (1985), The Flemish Movement: A Documentary History (1992), Crosscultural Transgressions: Research Models in Translation Studies II (2002) and Translating Others (2006).

Some of my work has been translated into Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, German, Greek, Spanish and Turkish.

In October 2006 I was given the honorary post of Adjunct Professor in the Department of Translation at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
