EXCALIBUR Project - Experiment III: Performance of the Guidance System with Different Low Floor Buses

by Nick Tyler and Martha Caiaffa

Abstract

This report gives the initial results of the third Excalibur experiment, which took place in the Royal Docks in October 1999. This experiment compared the performance of different buses with three types of kerb which have been designed for use at accessible bus stops. The report discusses some of the general principles that emerged from these (and the previous work in the Excalibur project) then describes the design implications for each of the four basic designs for bus stops. Issues surrounding horizontal and vertical gaps between a stationary bus and the platform are discussed and this is followed by consideration of the effects which arise while the bus is in motion as it approaches the platform. Finally, the views of the drivers involved in the experiments are summarised. It should be noted that users’ views about platforms and access to buses in general were considered in earlier Excalibur experiments and were not repeated in this case.
