Modelling interactions between bus operations and traffic flows

Summary

Description

The representation of bus operations in traffic models is currently too simplistic. Much of the work done so far either intended to assess thebenefits of segregating bus flows from the remaining traffic or regardedbuses in mixed traffic merely as large vehicles stopping from time to time to serve passengers. In the real world, however, interactions between busesand other vehicles are far more complicated than that.

This project aimed at the development of a more realistic representation of bus-related operations in traffic tools. The microscopic model SIGSIM was selected as the platform into which features have been incorporated to simulate:

Jointly with the EXCALIBUR project, data was collected from some bus stops in East London in order to test, calibrate and validate the model.
