Abstract
A variational approach is proposed to constructing tight shapes of linked perfect ropes each component of which is prescribed
to have a planar centreline. Two particular examples are considered and explicit solutions are presented.
A concept of tight periodic structures is introduced and discussed.
Both the method and the examples are hoped to provide an insight into the general properties of the ideal links and knots.
