We work in the Research Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment (formerly Biology) and are interested in the origin and significance of functional variation in epithelial proteins in particular mucins and lactase. We are currently studying mucin genes and genes involved in inflammation in relation to chest disease. Another interest is MUC1 variation in relation to gastritis. Our work on lactase aims to understand the evolutionary origins and molecular basis of lactase persistence in humans. We also have ongoing studies on the 1946 NSHD longitudinal cohort, particularly in relation to respiratory disease and projects involving drug metabolism enzymes.
