'The Cell Exhibition and Show'
Took
place on Wednesday
7 July 2004
between 2 and 7pm
in
the Baytree
Centre (300 Brixton Road, London SW9 6AE).
Preparation of the show
The
last ten sessions of the Baytree
Science Club (April-June 2004) were used
to provide an introduction to cell biology
and to prepare the
show. During
the first
six of these sessions, the children discovered what a cell is, looked at
cells under the microscope, learnt about the size and diversity of cells
(microbial, animal and plant cells) and the function of organelles. In the
following two sessions, the children produced posters and plasticine models
for the exhibition; the last two sessions were used for rehearsal of the
play ‘The Supercell’ (written by Anna Need).
The Cell Exhibition and Show
About 80 Year 5 and Year 6 pupils from two local primary schools
(Stockwell Primary School and St. Helen's Roman Catholic Primary School)
and their teachers attended the interactive science exhibition. Posters
and cell models prepared by the Baytree Science Club were used
as illustration materials for science activities. The pupils were divided
into groups of ten and each group took part in two out of the four different
science activities on
1. Animal Cells (organised by Cristiana Velloso),
2. Plant Cells (organised by Astrid Wingler),
3. Microbes (organised by Brigitte Meunier),
4. Dissection of Squid (organised by Lisa Magloff).
After the science exhibition, the children from the BSC performed a play, 'The Supercell', in which they played different cell components (mitochondria, lysosomes, cytoskeleton, cell receptor).
This project is financially supported by a BBSRC Community Award to Astrid Wingler. |
