One of the perks of the CoMPLEX program is the week long course in marine biology, organised in conjunction with the Marine Biology Association (MBA) in Plymouth.  The week involves a mix of lectures, practical sessions and field trips, and is really interesting and varied.  Many thanks to Fiona Crouch who looked after us in Plymouth, to everyone who lectured or taught us, and to everyone who helped out during the week or with its organisation.  It was a really enjoyable experience.

After the course, we were asked to produce a poster on something we had learned.  Joe Bailey and I worked together, and chose to base our work on Dr. Bob Clarke’s talk on multivariate analysis techniques and their uses in assessing the health of ecosystems.

Dr. Clarke gave us an introduction to PRIMER-E, a piece of software that his company produces.  PRIMER-E is a powerful multivariate statistics package for ecologists; see this link for more information.
