Jomon

Jomon culture is perhaps one of the best known example of prehistoric complex hunter-gatherers of the temperate zone. My research is mainly focused on the population dynamics [7] and the transformations of the settlement systems [3,6,8] between Early and Late Jomon Period (7000-3220 cal BP) in the Kanto region. Several studies has shown that during this time interval of ca 3,500 years, hunter-gatherer communities of this area have shown changes in their subsistence strategies, coupled with growth and crash in population size, and possible alternation between phases of nucleation and dispersion. My doctoral project will aim to assess the consistency of such patterns, their correlation with the environmental change and the catalyst determining such dynamics from the bottom-up perspective of human behavioural ecology.
