Preoperative radiotherapy may indeed have a survival benefit but the trial does have enough power to detect it.

This tobacco sponsored study set out with a wrong assumption that there would be a difference between spouses of smokers and spouses of non-smokers in the 30 year period when public smoking was so common that this difference would small anyway- so it is not right to say that absence of difference is equal to no difference.
