1 and 2 Bell Towers

Welcome to my list of towers that contain one or two bells hung for ringing, or that could potentially be hung for ringing, eg swing chimes with full circle wheels, or those rings that have reduced amounts of fittings making them unringable.

There is now an email list for those interested in such towers, and it is providing a useful source of information, confirming that there are quite a few ringers interested in such towers, and that there are a lot of such towers scattered around the country.

That list is at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/1and2bell

This list is not organised as best as it could be, and information is often minimal, so think of it more as a brain dump, and collective knowledge from all those that have contributed, and many thanks to them.

Computer Files:
Chimes: A list of chimes of all sorts looked after by Mike Chester. It started with all the chimes that have ever appeared in Dove being added to the list. Since then, lots of additions and ammendmants have been made. The latest copy is available from the Keltek Trust website, this webpage being checked against the version dated 15th August 2007.
National Bell Register: George Dawson has made available his Excel spreadsheets listing bells in churches. These form the basis of a National Bell Register starting with each church in England with a few other places added. There is a spreadsheet for each Diocese. So far, only England is covered, but a lot of information is included about all known bells, so the data in this webpage has been checked against these files.
Books & Periodicals:
Atlas: My red AA altas. I have had this for many years now and have all the Dove towers marked in it. The atlas is one the famous AA atlases that had the churches marked, dating from 1974. These were removed in later editions, so although the roads are now getting very out of date, it is still very useful to see where the towers are! Over the years, I have added chimes and lower number towers as I have found them, so I have been through and noted down the 1 and 2 bell towers and added them to this list.
Ringing World: The weekly magazine for bellringers. Not much coverage of 1 and 2 bell towers but they are sometimes mentioned as part of an article.
Dove: Dove's Guide to the Ringing Peals of the World. The bible of all tower grabbers, it lists all rings of bells. Earlier additions before the 9th listed chimes as well, often noting any bells in the chime hung for ringing. As the 9th edition omitted them, Mike Chester created the chimes list as above. Dove is now online at the Central Council website but still only lists ringing peals and not chimes.
