Making different cortical interneurons

Cortical function depends on a delicate balance between excitation – provided by the principal neurons – and inhibition – provided by interneurons. This latter group is exceptionally diverse in morphology, physiology and molecular identity, a heterogeneity that is specified during embryogenesis. We use comparative microarray analysis of immature interneurons to identify candidate genes that may be involved in molecular specification of cortical interneuron identity and development."
