The Wolfson Institute for Biomedical Research
at the Cruciform Building

Introduction

The Wolfson Institute for Biomedical Research (WIBR, originally the Cruciform Project) was established in 1995 as an Institute within UCL. Its aim is to facilitate the interface between fundamental biological research and its application both to the discovery of new medicines and to clinical practice.

Over the years we have developed a scientific environment comprising a number of areas of biological research including cell cycle, stem cells, neuroscience, mitochondria and cancer. In addition we have a medicinal chemistry group that is closely connected to the biological research of the Institute. Medicinal chemistry is responsible for synthesising molecules to be used as probes for biochemical and molecular targets; in some circumstances these may become prototypes for the discovery of new drugs.

We have established a modern and efficient infrastructure, and services that provide support to research groups both within and outside the WIBR and UCL. Because of its proximity and use of similar technologies we have particularly strong links with the recently opened UCL Cancer Institute. Based on the successful implementation of the infrastructure of our Institute, the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences has begun an initiative for the development of Platform Technologies that will operate via the Faculty.

The opportunities in translational research created by this environment are managed by our business development unit, in close association with our company UCL Cruciform Ltd and UCL Business PLC, the commercial team of UCL. We have set up a number of successful spinout companies in the areas of vascular gene therapy, anti-infective drugs, cancer and infectious diseases. In order to enhance our opportunities for drug discovery, since 2005 we have accommodated the development arm (both medicinal chemistry and biology) of Cancer Research UK. This creates opportunities for synergism in the area of cancer prevention and treatment.

The Institute now comprises more than 200 scientists, many of whom are of international standing, who have initiated a large number of collaborative projects with groups within UCL, the UK and abroad. In addition, the friendly and interactive environment of the WIBR provides a unique training environment for postgraduate research students.
