WII projects

Over the last 25 years the core Whitehall II study data collection and research has been supported by a successive series of programme grants from:

  • Medical Research Council (MRC, UK)
  • British Heart Foundation (BHF, UK)
  • National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI, USA)
  • National Institute on Aging (NIA, USA)

Current funding from these sponsors covers work on several research projects. These reflect both our ongoing interest in the socio-economic gradient and cardiovascular disease as well as our current moves into research on ageing.

External projects

In addition, we provide Whitehall II research data to many collaborators and external bona fide researchers working in public health projects across the world. Access is governed by the WII data sharing policy, established successfully in 2008. To date, we have 108 data sharing projects, 36 of which are genetic projects.

In the context of data sharing, Whitehall II contributes to existing pooled datasets from studies across Europe and Scandinavia. See for instance:

The Whitehall II data sharing policy and data documentation have been adopted by the MRC Data Support Service as a model of good practice.
