Synthesis: Synthetic Biology Workshop

The Synthesis Exchange Workshop was organized by The Arts Catalyst and UCL with Synthetic Aesthetics and SymbioticA. It was a six day intensive lab workshop with lectures, group discussion and a public meeting was held in the summer of 2011.

The course was jointly devised, organized and run by John Ward and Jane Gregory (SynBion, UCL), Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg (Synthetic Aesthetics) and Oron Catts (Symbiotica, The University of Western Australia).

From the 4th to the 9th of July 20 participants comprising artists, philosophers, architects, engineers and scientists worked together to learn synthetic biology techniques and to exchange ideas from their respective fields.
The process enabled diverse disciplines to examine together some of the emerging ideas and wider implications of synthetic biology and to form ideas for collaborative projects.

The funding was from a Wellcome Trust Arts Award, with support from The Arts Catalyst (Arts Council England funded), the SynBion network (funded by BBSRC and EPSRC), SymbioticA (The University of Western Australia) and Synthetic Aesthetics (funded by EPSRC and the National Science Foundation).

A video of highlights of the week and interviews with the organisers was made by Josephine McNally.
