Urban Lab Exchange

Urban Lab Exchange is a new initiative offering a range of professional and community short courses, as well as access to UCL Urban Laboratory's multi-disciplinary community of urban experts and researchers.

It has been designed as a platform to share knowledge between academics specialising in urban research, professionals working in architecture, planning, development, and urban policy, arts practitioners and community and neighbourhood interest groups, including organisers and activists. Responding to strong demand for original approaches to help improve cities and for the sharing of new knowledge and methods across conventional boundaries, Urban Lab Exchange will identify and bring people together to address key global and local challenges.

At a range of introductory and advanced levels, one- and two-day short courses will provide strategic and fine-grained perspectives on themes such as ethical regeneration, gentrification, housing, security and design, public and private space, urban heritage, nightlife and the night economy, smart cities, and university-led urban development. Courses will emphasise collaborative and participatory methods - through a mix of lectures, hands-on workshops, site visits, debates and networking in intimate groups, along with briefing papers and toolkits to take away. These courses will provide invaluable opportunities to access UCL expertise in these areas and bring professional experience to the table, supporting continuing professional development across a range of professions and practices, and enabling new publics to engage with the latest advancements in the understanding and practice of urbanism.

Urban Lab Exchange draws on the full range of inventive methodologies and specialist areas UCL Urban Laboratory has developed and implemented since our launch in 2005. As a cross-discipinary centre for critical, evidence-based research on cities and urban life, we comprise approaches from architecture, anthropology, geography, fine art, engineering, computer science, and the humanities.

On request, Urban Lab Exchange provides bespoke training sessions and research consultancy services.

An intensive one-day course presenting comparative case studies and good practice guidelines on university campus development which engage with and contribute to wider urban regeneration goals, positioning universities as 'anchor institutions'.

Aimed at developers and consultants, university estates professionals, town planners, masterplanning firms, and architectural practices, the course will address specific industry challenges in the field of university-led urban regeneration, notably:
