Walking Stoke Newington at Cities Methodologies 2014

As part of the programme for Cities Methodologies 2014, join Eduardo Canteros (Sociologist and Social Worker, PhD in Architecture and Urban Studies at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile) and Tom Stone (artist) on a 'walkshop' in the search for the correct definition of a 'city'.

This workshop attempts to apprehend and comprehend the city - in part at least - through walking and photographing. Always, when we create a city definition certain scales are weighted with more importance, and at the same time, others (scales) are silenced. In any case, you need to decide because talking about the city is always an indication and a mistake.

For this workshop, a small corner of a city will be focused on, to search for traces of how communities are built - a search for the 'quotidianisation' in action - and look at how the certain areas 'protect' themselves by creating a value sets which define communal identities.

This workshop takes its lead from two elements: first, research findings about a localised urban conflict in Hackney carried out between January-March 2014; and second, the experience obtained during 'Stand up, Dear City' - a bi-monthly walking workroom that adopts different themes to explore and attend to the city of Bristol and its surrounding spaces

It is an invitation to three-hours walking, take photos and reflect about the daily life in a city neighbourhood.

What are we going to do?

We will meet at 10am in coffee shop in a corner of Stoke Newington (Dynevor Rd. with Stoke Newington High Street), where you will be given materials and instructions about the walking route. You will also be introduced to a manifesto, which will provide context to the workshop and a platform from which to start discussions.

We expect to walk around the Stoke Newington area, to hear from three local leaders, and read from authors who take the city as their muse and those scholars who have analysed the role of walking in daily life.

Finally, we will come back to the same coffee shop where we started the walking for sharing some ideas about the experience and, attendees will be invited to send us their photo essays for creating a webpage where we discuss the walk, conflict and daily life in one neighbourhood in London.

What do you need for this workshop?

We advice you to wear comfortable clothes and shoes, bring water and a device which allows you to take photos (camera, mobile phone).
