UCL Urban Laboratory was formed in 2005 with the intention of bringing together the best urban teaching and research at UCL, building on a full spectrum of work across the arts and sciences, and a rich heritage of pioneering thinkers, communicators and practitioners who have taught and studied at UCL, including Patrick Abercrombie, Reyner Banham, Peter Cook, Ruth Glass, Peter Hall, Derek Jarman, Otto Königsberger, Eduardo Paolozzi and Walter Segal.

Since then, we have been at the forefront of critical and creative urban knowledge exchange, thinking, engagement and practice internationally. Our activities currently focus on six key areas: housing and dishousing; ecology and metabolism; change and crisis; imagination and design; data and place; and citizenship and cosmopolitanism.

Recent projects have included research on the decline of LGBTQI night-time venues in London; research on universities roles as actors in the regeneration processes of cities; a mapping  exercise of cultural infrastructure in the environs of London's Olympic Park; and working with an artist-in-residence to produce a meditative film on the Shard that questions the relationship between the individual and the larger global dynamics of finance in the City.

We also produce the acclaimed series of online and print publications Urban Pamphleteer, which have featured issues on regeneration in London, smart and future cities, heritage and renewal in Doha, and open-source solutions to the UK's housing crisis.

All new and returning UCL students with an interest in cities and urbanism are invited to join us for an introductory session on Tuesday 4 October, hosted by our Director Dr Ben Campkin, to find out more about these projects, and how the Urban Lab could benefit you during your time at UCL.

UCL Urban Laboratory is funded by three UCL faculties (The Bartlett, UCL Faculty of the Built Environment; the UCL Faculty of Social and Historical Sciences; and UCL Engineering) with additional support from the UCL Faculty of Arts and Humanities.
