Four Bartlett Visiting Research Fellows will present and discuss their unique research projects on Tuesday 25th March at Wates House.

Among the four, Dr Beatrice de Carli and Eduardo Canteros are based at UCL Urban Laboratory in conjunction with the Development Planning Unit (DPU).

Among the topics being discussed is:

  • 'Insurgent Regeneration' (Dr Beatrice de Carli): A critical review of notions and practices looking at the capacity of occupant practices to inform and steer state-led discourses on 'sustainable urban regeneration' in inner city areas of the Global South.
  • 'Urban values from a grassroots organisation' (Eduardo Canteros): Located in the Borough of Hackney in northeast London, this research project will examine specific urban regeneration projects rejected by the community. The aim is to identify and analyse the urban values configured by community organisations when they reject urban regeneration projects.
  • 'The limits of shrinkage' (Matthias Bernt): Since their very earliest histories, cities across the world have seen phases of population decline - occasionally to the point of total abandonment. The present is no exception - in Europe, since the late 20th century, urban shrinkage has become a normal pathway of urban development for many cities. This research looks at this debate in more detail and asks where the limit is.
  • 'Neo-Haussmannization' (Dr Andy Merrifield): This research is a new riff off an old tale of divide and rule through urban change, of upscaling the physical environment to upscale the social and political environment. What happened in mid-nineteenth-century Paris now happens globally, now creates a new urban fabric clothing the whole wide world.

All are welcome to attend, and there will be a drinks reception to follow.
