8 : ESP-SIM
Enabled Self Procurement Simulation

PhotoThe ESP-sim project sets out to define and illustrate 'enabled self procurement' (ESP) as a viable model for UK housing.

ESP is an alternative form of housing delivery where the future residents of a community become the developers of their own homes, assisted by an enabling developer and a progressive local authority. It is believed ESP can deploy an application of pattern book housing in conjunction with urban design codes to offer choice to the individual whilst controlling quality on the overall development. ESP can also offer individuals an enhanced investment opportunity in environmental design of their own homes.

To illustrate this potentially complex process, the project team is developing multi-user on line software called Youcanplan, which combines 3d housing visualisations with in built online consultation functionality, and offering feedback on the process and design outcomes.

The project has just launched the Youcanplan Pattern Books competition with the support of RIBA and Design for Homes. Follow the link above for details.

ESP and Youcanplan is also explained in detail on the project's website at http://www.esp-sim.org, and an array of professional and academic viewpoints on the subject will be captured on the website's blog throughout the project.
