FLS meeting today JZ Young LT 2.30pm
Dear UCLUCU Member,
As reported previously, staff in the Faculty of Life Sciences
(FLS) have been told of the existence of a proposal to reduce the
numbers of academics in their Faculty. Management will first seek
volunteers, but if they consider insufficient volunteers are forthcoming,
College Council has approved a move towards compulsory redundancies.
Support staff in FLS have also been informed that proposals are
being drawn up to cut posts.
Yesterday (Tuesday 19 Jan) UCU representatives met with the Dean
and Senior Management Team of Life Sciences to discuss Management's
proposals. While we have been asked not to divulge details from
the meeting at this point, we can report that our representatives
are extremely conscious that UCU cannot formally "agree"
any set of criteria which may be used for redundancy purposes. The
branch committee has received a detailed summary of the meeting
which we will discuss, with representatives from the Life Sciences
Faculty, this Thursday.
In the meantime we would draw FLS members' attention to the fact
that this afternoon (Wednesday 20 Jan) the Dean of Life Sciences,
Mary Collins, will be addressing an academic staff meeting in one
half of the FLS, Biosciences, at 2.30pm in the JZ Young Lecture
Theatre (Anatomy Building, Gower St site), and questions can be
put to her at that meeting.
