News: UCU-supported anti-Fascist March & Parade: Sat 21 June

Dear UCLUCU Member,

This is a reminder from your local Exec Committee about the UCU-supported National March and Parade against Fascism and Racism on Saturday 21 June, called by Unite Against Fascism.

The event which is subtitled "Stop the Fascist BNP" was called at short notice to respond to the recent electoral success of the British National Party in the Greater London Elections and elsewhere.

In recent years the BNP has sought to rebuild its influence by attempting to present itself as a respectable political party. This is in spite the fact that their leader, Nick Griffin, has a conviction for Holocaust denial and other leading members have convictions for handling explosives and acts of violence. Members may remember that in 1999 former BNP member David Copeland was jailed for life after he was convicted of planting nail bombs in Brixton, Brick Lane and Soho - killing three people.

The demonstration on 21 June is an opportunity for Londoners to stand up and be counted. UCU is calling on all its members to try to attend the protest and to bring friends, colleagues and their families.

If any members would like to join the UCU contingent, we are meeting in front of the Unicorn Theatre on Tooley Street, SE1 2HZ at 12 noon (see map).
