Mutations in VCP gene implicated in a number of neurodegenerative diseases
New research, published in Neuron, gives insight into how single mutations in the VCP gene cause a range of neurological conditions including a form of dementia called Inclusion Body Myopathy, Paget’s Disease of the Bone and Frontotemporal Dementia (IBMPFD), and the motor neuron disease Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Public lectures: new research into Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Motor Neuron Disease
You are invited to an evening (13th March 2013) exploring the very latest in cutting edge research into neurodegenerative diseases. Supported by the Wellcome Trust, scientists investigating Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Motor Neuron disease will explain how our understanding of these disorders is changing in the light of new discoveries in genetics and cell biology, and how these discoveries impact on developing new drugs for these diseases.

Bioinformatics, Statistical Genetics & Epigenetics, KCL
The Bioinformatics, Statistical Genetics & Epigenetics (BSGE), King's College London (KCL), cluster combines an interdisciplinary research programme drawing from
expertise across a group of investigators working towards interpreting
genetics and genomes in medicine and biology.
The Bioinformatics
component develops and applies methodologies and applications across a
broad spectrum of genetics-related data analysis tools including next
generation sequencing (NGS) analysis, microarray analysis, evolutionary
biology and interaction networks especially as they relate to disease
processes.
The Statistical Genetics component focuses on
inferential techniques for drawing appropriate conclusions from noisy
data, and applications include genome-wide association studies (GWAS) as
well as aspects of NGS.
The Epigenetics component focuses on
understanding the mechanisms of this important mode of gene regulation,
and how the misplacement or misinterpretation of epigenetic marks can
contribute to human disease states. This is achieved through combining
molecular biology with powerful bioinformatics approaches, enabling data
from the laboratory to be extrapolated to the whole genome
Together,
these three disciplines provide a powerful genetic analysis programme
to assess human variation, disease aetiology and the contribution of
epigenetics in inherited disease.
