Research Interests

My background is in Computer Science, mainly in Computer Graphics (1964-76) and Interactive System Design (1976-present), subjects on which I have written several books. I’ve had the good fortune to spend half of the last forty years working at research centres run by Xerox Corporation, in Palo Alto (1973-79) and Cambridge, UK (1988-2002).

I joined UCLIC as a Visiting Professor in July 2002. Since then I have taught, jointly with John Dowell, the MSc module on Perspectives on Design. .I have also supervised a number of successful MSc projects by UCLIC students. Currently my main research is into how the familiar designs of today’s user interfaces have evolved, and into the insights that these stories can offer to designers and researchers.
