Research Interests
I am interested in how real-time sensory feedback can be used to help people learn the violin. By real-time feedback I mean feedback about a person's performance which is delivered to the student while they are playing so they have the chance to adapt and improve their playing as they go. I have included the word 'sensory' to suggest that this kind of feedback will be delivered in a way that appeals to the senses (e.g. tactile, visual, audio...) and does not require too much cognitive processing to become meaningful.
My research mainly involves building prototypes and evaluating them in real-world settings. I recently conducted one study with a university orchestra and another one at musical summer school. In both cases I was comparing giving visual feedback with giving vibrotactile feedback (vibrations on the arms). The next study I am planning is working with a high school orchestra to look at the longer-term effect of using vibrotactile feedback for practicing the violin.
