About Me
I am a PhD student at the UCL Interaction Centre.
I am interested in understanding the psychology of human-computer interaction, that is, in understanding how humans act in a real environment.Of specific interest is why and how humans adapt their strategy for interacting with interfaces, particularly in multitasking situations. I study aspects of (reinforcement) learning & adaptation, performance and resource trade-offs, and the effect that psychological and environmental characteristics have on human performance and behavior. As a research strategy I conduct experimental, quantitative studies and develop cognitive and user models (using for example ACT-R, and Cognitively Bounded Rational Analysis models).
I am currently finishing up my PhD and looking for a new research position (see also below under "news"). Download my CV by clicking here.
My supervisors are:
- Dr. Duncan Brumby (primary)
- Dr. John Dowell
- Prof Nick Chater (now at Behavioural Science Group, Warwick Business School, University of Warwick)
- Prof Andrew Howes (External, University of Birmingham)
News
March 2012 The end of my PhD is getting in sight, I am currently writing up my thesis and also looking for the next research position (e.g., post-doc), to gain more research experience and broaden my horizons. Due to social constraints I am mostly looking in or near the San Francisco Bay Area, but I am also open to other suggestions. My ideal start date is somewhere around September/October 2012. Do contact me if you are interested or know of an interesting position. Here is my CV.
I will be attending the upcoming ICCM (Berlin, Germany, April) and CHI (Austin, TX, May) conferences. Do look me up!

November 2011 I am giving a couple of talks in the upcoming months:
- November 8th: At the University of Birmingham (Human-Computer Interaction Research Centre within the School of Computer Science)
- November 30th: I'm at the workshop on "Cognitive Load and In-Vehicle Human-Machine Interaction" that precedes the "Automotive User Interaces and Interactive Vehicular Applications" conference in Salzburg, Austria.
- October 13: I was an invited speaker at the Donders Discussion 2011 organized by the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition, and Behaviour (Nijmegen, the Netherlands)
July 2011 Two journal papers got recently accepted:
- Janssen, C.P., & Gray, W.D.. (2012) When, What, and How Much to Reward in Reinforcement Learning based Models of Cognition. Cognitive Science, 36(2), 333-358. DOI: 10.1111/j.1551-6709.2011.01222.x [fully formatted ; preprint ]

May-August 2011 I am working as a visiting scholar / summer intern at PARC (Palo Alto Research Center) in Palo Alto, California. My mentor at PARC is Dr. Peter Pirolli.
May 2011 I am at the CHI2011 conference in Vancouver. I presented my research in the doctoral consortium. You can view my poster here. You can read my full proposal here. My advisor, Duncan Brumby, also presented a full paper on some work of us about how priorities influence interface choice in a multitasking setting, which was conducted together with Sam Davies and Justin Grace. You can read the paper here. For a full list of my work, please click on publications.
April 2011 I passed my upgrade viva/exam! At the upgrade viva (roughly equivalent to US QUALS / proposal stage), a student needs to defend the research conducted so far and the work planned for the last year.
April 2011 Our paper "The importance of feedback in optimizing performance" (Farmer, Janssen, Brumby) got accepted for the Annual meeting of the Cognitive Science Society. The paper is based on George Famer's MSc research.
February/March 2011 I will give an invited seminar at the London Judgment and Decision Making Group on Wednesday 2nd of March (at 17.00 hour). See their website for more information. In the talk I will outline my PhD research up till date.
January 2011 Two journal papers have recently been printed:

We also had a paper accepted for CHI 2011:
Brumby, D.P., Davies, S.D., Janssen, C.P., & Grace, J.J. (2011). Fast or safe? How performance objectives determine modality output choices while interacting on the move. In proceedings of the SIGCHI conference on human factors in computing systems, 2011.
December 2010 I got accepted as a participant at the CHI 2011 Doctoral Consortium. CHI is the primary international conference on human-computer interaction.
December 2010 I have a new website, in the UCLIC style - hopefully no bugs are present. For some of the pages I still need to update the information.
