Research Summary

Background After completing my specialist training as a general practitioner, I was awarded a Sir Jules Thorne Research Fellowship and then an MRC Epidemiology Training Fellowship with the MRC General Practice Research Framework. I was subsequently appointed Senior Lecturer in General Practice at St Mary's (now Imperial College), and took up my current professorial appointment at UCL in 1993. Research My research has focused on the role of general practice in promoting healthy lifestyle with particular reference to the detection and management of patients with excessive alcohol consumption. I was the principal investigator on a major randomized controlled trial on this subject, carried out by the MRC GPRF. During my appointment in St Mary's, I led a programme of research on the promotion of healthy lifestyle in older people. Following my professorial appointment at UCL, I developed a major programme of research on the role of eHealth applications for patients seen in primary care, securing substantial external grant funding to conduct a programme of studies culminating in a large-scale multi centre randomised controlled trial and economic evaluation of joint teleconsultations versus standard outpatient appointments for patients referred by their general practitioner for a specialist opinion. My most recent research focuses on the effectiveness of interactive programmes in delivering health information and achieving behavioural change in patients seen in primary care settings, and I am principal investigator on an MRC funded on-line RCT to determine the effectiveness of an interactive website in reducing excessive alcohol consumption. National and International roles Since 2006 I have been the Director of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Primary Care Research Network PCRN) and the Deputy Director of the NIHR Clinical Research Networks. As the Director of the NIHR PCRN, I have responsibility for overseeing the successful delivery in primary care of a national portfolio of high quality clinical trials and other well designed studies in England. The PCRN comprises 8 local research networks which provide comprehensive national coverage across England, and collaborate the other NIHR networks, the MRC General Practice Research framework, and the national primary care research networks in the Devolved Administrations. I am currently the Chair of the Society of Academic Primary Care (SAPC)Heads of Departments Group. I am a recent past President of the Royal Society of Medicine Section on Telemedicine and eHealth, and a recent past member of the eHealth Commissioning Group of the NHS Service Delivery and Organisation R&D Programme. I am a founder member of the WONCA European Society of General Practice/Family Medicine and a past President of the European General Practice Research Network.
