Summary

During my career, I have tried to blend technological progress with biological discovery, developing a skill set highly applicable in interdisciplinary collaborations. As a post-doc at Yale, in the laboratory of Dr David Schatz (Section of Immunobiology, Head, Dr Richard Flavell), I developed the highly cited cDNA RDA technique for the detection of differentially expressed genes1,2. Returning to the UK in 1997 I continued the theme of transcriptional regulation as a Research Fellow at the University of Sussex, focussing on the response to DNA damage. In a number of papers I helped delineate and clarify several aspects of the p53 signalling pathway3. In 1999 I took up a lectureship at UCL Institute of Child Health, continuing to publish on the DNA damage response and also developing an interest in highly parallel transcriptional assays. I established the ICH Gene Microarray Centre in 2000, which  subsequently developed into UCL Genomics (www.genomics.ucl.ac.uk).

My research focuses on two areas, the global analysis of transcriptional responses and the development and application of genomic methods to biological and clinical questions.
