Summary

Hugh obtained a first class BSc in Cardiorespiratory Physiology and Neuropharmacology in 1984, before graduating from the Middlesex Hospital Medical School in 1987. He obtained his higher research degree from University of London in 1987. He is accredited in General Internal Medicine, Cardiology and Intensive Care Medicine. He has published >180 scientific papers, two in 'Nature'.

Research Summary

RENIN-ANGIOTENSIN SYSTEMS play fundamental roles in human tissues. Work has focussed on their role in regulating tissue (especially cardiac) growth, inflammatory responses (especially in the lung) and in the regulation of human (especially hypoxic) physical performance. Most recently, work continues in studying their role in metabolic regulation.

HUMAN PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE is an area of interest. The group reported the first allele associated with such performance, in 1998. We have since reported other alleles. Ongong work addresses the physiology of muscle and skeletal changes in response to loading (exercise) and unloading/ critical illness.

CRITICAL CARE MEDICINE studies have focussed on ARDS (acute lung injury) and its associated genetics. Ongoing work is examining the musculoskeletal and functional impacts of vritical care.

HYPOXIC ADAPTATION is a major interest. Hugh was the reearch lead for the 2007 Caudwell Xtreme Everest Research Expedition.

CLIMATE CHANGE and its health consequences is an additional and key focus.
