Advanced Translation from Dutch into English
The course is taught in the Department of Dutch.
It is mainly practical in orientation and focuses on translating modern pragmatic as well as literary texts. The pragmatic texts come from both the public and the private sector. The literary texts involve working with the Dutch Writer in Residence and collaborating with students at other universities using WebCT and videoconferences. Sessions are devoted to issues of speed and volume, accuracy and fluency, technological aids, information retrieval, glossary building, revision techniques, project and time management.
The course aims to develop vocational translation routines and an understanding of the translation process in a contemporary professional context.
The course is assessed on the basis of an extended translation project.
