20 Bedford Way Masterplan: Student Consultation Debrief
21 September 2017
We are delighted to announce that new proposals have been developed for Phase 1 of the Estates Masterplan for 20 Bedford Way, responding to the feedback you gave us as part of the student consultation held in June and July this year.
The IOE Masterplan aims to renovate our estate, deliver facilities to staff and students that match our world-class status, and free up under-utilised space. It represents an exciting opportunity for us all to shape our future estate and to work and study in modern, comfortable and inspiring surroundings in the not-too-distant future.
The project team has developed a completely new proposal which was not amongst the options originally reviewed, and which has been developed specifically to meet the needs and desires that you shared with us during the consultation.
Student consultation outcome
During the consultation held in June and July this year, you told us how much many of you value the current Students’ Union UCL space at the IOE, and identified the aspects you found most important. Your comments had the backing of IOE staff, some of whom also use and value the bar, and many of whom were keen for students’ views to be heard and acted on.
Since digesting your feedback, our architects have been working hard to find a solution which will meet these needs without compromising the wider aims of the project.
Revised Phase 1 proposal
The emerging proposals suggest that the renovation of Wing A Level 4 and a portion of the roof terrace will be brought forward and included within Phase 1 of the project. This would become the permanent home of the Student Union Bar, and would include:
- Newly upgraded outside space
- A new and bigger Institute bar including a catering service
- A segregated area for social learning
- Additional desk space for students
- A greater overall student area than previously proposed, all in one place
- Innovative, state-of-the-art design and equipment
- A new prayer room facility
We hope that you are as excited as we are about these new proposals. However, as they have an impact on staff currently working in that area, we are developing plans for their new area and will be working with those staff to ensure that their own needs are met before the proposal is confirmed.
Update on current work and facilities
Work on the non-occupied areas of the wing on the lower levels has now been approved to proceed, and will be taking place over the coming weeks.
On Level 3, Students’ Union UCL are working to increase the capacity and variety of the catering offered by the Institute Bar, which remains in service and pending acceptance of the revised plans by the Project Board, and is expected to do so until January 2018. Should the plans proceed, at this point we expect it to be temporarily relocated to a pop-up facility (subject to statutory approvals) and/or Wing A Level 2, until its new home in Wing A Level 4 is ready. This new facility will be provided before the closure of the Level 3 bar.
In addition, UCL Estates are currently working to arrange internal access (initially via the doors on at least Level 7 in Core C, but hopefully through more floors) for IOE staff and students to the canteen in 26 Bedford Way. We are also enhancing these facilities to adapt to potentially increased demand and are aiming to have this ready for the start of term.
The prayer room, currently located in Level 2, wing A, will be re-provided in a room at Bedford Way in the coming weeks – we are looking at various options and consulting with relevant colleagues regarding suitability of this space for this facility.
I hope this information answers any questions you may have had, and I look forward to working with you on our new estate over the coming years. Should you have any queries, please email email@example.com.
