Programme for 2010-2011
Online collaboration using remote-operated laboratory equipment
Ben Hanson - Department of Mechanical Engineering

Lab
experiments are an important component of many science and engineering
degree courses. Recently, "Remote laboratories" are increasingly being
developed to provide students with web-based access to real laboratory
experiments. These have been shown to offer some desirable features,
e.g. increased accessibility, student-led learning; however there are
concerns that remote access will be overly substituted for hands-on
practical work, and reduce interaction between students. Ben was
interested in investigating the possibilities for combining a
remote-laboratory with a live online chat facility, which could
potentially allow real-time collaboration with a laboratory experiment
and students all sited at different locations. This year, with the help
of Dr. Jane Hughes and an Academic Development Grant from CALT, he
conducted a pilot study with UCL students and will present the results
here.
