Vice-Provost (Education & Student Affairs)

Professor Anthony Smith, Vice-Provost (Education & Student Affairs), is responsible for the teaching, learning and assessment agenda at UCL, providing leadership on education issues at an institutional level.

His team is responsible for developing and implementing the institutional Education Strategy, and for monitoring the quality of the student experience through the Student Experience Committee.

Major initiatives include:

  • Connected Curriculum: an institution-wide initiative which aims to ensure that all UCL students are able to learn through participating in research and enquiry at all levels of their programme of study.
  • Global Citizenship Programme: a two week programme for UCL students offering the chance to put their studies in a global context, learn new skills and see the world differently.
  • UCL Arena: a programme of professional development for UCL teaching staff.
  • UCL ChangeMakers: an initiative supporting students and staff to work in partnership with each other on educational enhancement projects at UCL.

The Vice-Provost (Education & Student Affairs) office also has responsibility for UCL’s strategic educational partnerships including with the UCL Academy.

Vice-Provost (Education & Student Affairs)

Professor Anthony Smith is responsible for the education agenda at UCL and providing leadership at institutional level.  Prior to his appointment at UCL on 1 January 2012, Professor Smith was Principal and Dean of the School of Pharmacy, University of London.

Dr Clare Goudy 

Director of Education Planning

Clare leads the Vice-Provost (Education & Student Affairs) team and works closely with the Vice-Provost on strategic planning for UCL’s education agenda. She is responsible for the Education Strategy and for UCL’s education partnerships. Clare worked in the education charity sector and for the Department for Education and Skills before joining UCL in 2005.

Noel Caliste

Executive Assistant

Noel is the first point of contact for all visitors and enquiries to the Vice Provost (Education & Student Affairs) office.  Primarily providing support to Professor Smith, Noel also services committees and provides course administration support for the Global Citizenship Programme.  Prior to joining the team in 2015, Noel provided support to academics in Higher Education for over four years. Noel is also the Departmental Administrator.

Christopher Cullen 

Project Manager (Education & Estates)

Christopher's current projects include assisting on various teaching spaces initiatives including teaching furniture and timetabling – and other academic-related initiatives. Prior to working at UCL, Chris worked as an Assistant Project Manager in the Directorate of Estates and Facilities, King’s College London.

Ruth Siddall

Dr Ruth Siddall

Student Mediator

Ruth is UCL’s Student Mediator and is responsible for advising and assisting UCL students with the resolution of complaints, involving staff or other students or services of UCL which the student has been unable to resolve through informal means. Her role is to seek to achieve a resolution between the parties in dispute. She has been working in student support at UCL for over 15 years.

Irrum Ali

Communications Manager

Irrum is editor of the UCL Teaching and Learning Portal and Teaching and Learning e-newsletter. As well as collating, writing and editing news and case studies from across UCL, she supports the team and departments across UCL to deliver education communications. Irrum graduated from UCL in 2012.

Tim Beasley-Murray


Dr Tim Beasley-Murray

Academic Director, Global Citizenship

Tim's role is to provide academic leadership for UCL's Global Citizenship Programme and to promote the complex and challenging concept of Global Citizenship across UCL's activities.  He is also Senior Lecturer in European Thought and Culture at the UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies.

Judith Hillmore 

Head of Global Citizenship Programmes

Judith is responsible for overseeing the delivery of the UCL Global Citizenship Programme. She is also involved in the development of an online and face to face interdisciplinary option for all new undergraduate students. Judith worked in publishing and the charitable sector before joining UCL in 2001.

Josh Blacker 

Global Citizenship Programme Manager

Josh co-ordinates the UCL Global Citizenship Programme, a two-week course designed to help UCL students boost their studies, enhance their future and make an impact on the world. It is open to all undergraduates and takes place after summer exams. He is also responsible for the Global Citizenship Project Grants scheme, which is UCL’s largest student grant fund. Having graduated from UCL in 2009, he returned in 2012 after a period working for a major national charity.

Sally Mackenzie

Head of Student Engagement

Sally is responsible for overseeing student engagement at UCL and ensuring that students feel that their opinions are valued and acted upon. Engagement activities range from providing opportunities for feedback such as student surveys, focus groups and student representation on committees, to implementing opportunities for students to become more closely involved as partners in university projects.  Prior to joining the team, Sally has worked for a number of other universities including the Institute of Education, Macquarie University in Sydney and King’s College London.

Rebecca Allen

Student Experience Data Manager

Rebecca is responsible for managing the various student surveys run by the department, and monitoring and analysing the results at institutional and departmental levels. This information is used to inform policy and strategy development, as well as to give us a picture of student experience as a whole at UCL. Prior to joining UCL in 2015, Rebecca worked as a data manager for a major rail operator in London.

Sophie Tuhey

Education Partnerships Manager

Sophie is responsible for managing UCL's education partnerships. This includes the UCL Academy, a non-selective mixed state school in Camden, of which UCL is the sole sponsor. Sophie splits her time between the Vice-Provost (Education & Student Affairs) office and the UCL Academy, and sits on the board of governors at Newham Collegiate Sixth Form Centre. Before taking up this role, Sophie worked in widening participation, running projects designed to support students from under-represented groups to access higher education.
