A walk through Bates' and Wallace's Leicester
Bates was born and grew up in Leicester. He met Wallace while the latter was for a while a teacher at the Collegiate School in Leicester.  In Leicester, Bates showed Wallace the wonders of beetles, and together they planned their trip to the Brazilian Amazon. The photographs show a walk through 18th and 19th Century Leicester streets that Bates and Wallace would have known. To a southerner like myself, Leicester seems a fairly grim place (I visited in January, and there were patches of snow on the ground in places), but these older streets have a good atmosphere...
