MSc in Systems Engineering Management
Developed with industry, for industry
Today, industry is given the responsibility for designing, building, operating and enhancing large, complex and highly integrated systems. It does this in the face of intense international competition. Organisations are increasingly recognising that their capabilities in effectively dealing with complex systems are a critical differentiator in the marketplace. The cornerstone of such capabilities are the organisations' employees.
The UCL Centre for Systems Engineering (UCLse) specifically developed the Masters programme in Systems Engineering Management with industrial partners in order to provide an accredited qualification1 with which organisations can develop the systems engineering and management capability of their employees. We continue this relationship through our industrial advisory board, which ensures the programme remains cutting-edge and relevant for today's industrial challenges.
In addition to the MSc (/PGDip/PGCert) Systems Engineering Management, we also now offer domain-tailored PGCert qualifications:
- PGCert in Space Systems Engineering
- PGCert in Rail Systems Engineering
- PGCert in Defence Systems Engineering
Our programme combines the academic rigour characteristic of UCL with the practical expertise developed through our collaboration with industry. It is designed to allow you, the student, to continue working full-time while studying. In order to remain as flexible as possible while retaining the advantage of face-to-face teaching, we teach modules in short, one-week blocks on campus, which you support through home study. Modules can be taken in the order and at the pace best suited to you.
At UCLse we have established five driving principles for successful systems engineering management, based on our extensive experience with space systems engineering derived through the Mullard Space Science Laboratory. These principles underpin all our teaching. We also emphasise the importance of understanding the business and enterprise context for complex engineering projects across all programme elements - something we know to be crucial for long term success.
Qualifications and study modes
There are six qualifications that can be achieved:
- Masters of Science (MSc) Systems Engineering Management
- Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) Systems Engineering Management
- Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) in Systems Engineering Management, Space Systems Engineering, Rail Systems Engineering or Defence Systems Engineering
These qualifications require 180, 120 and 60 credits respectively and details of what you need for each can be found on our Programme Details page.
You can choose the timing and nature of your study to suit work demands, building up credits towards your chosen qualification from modules selected from the programme diet. To further enhance the programme's flexibility, up to three modules can be taken as short courses before registration on the desired qualification.
Alternatively, you may enrol in the full-time mode and complete the MSc, PGDip or PGCert in one year.
Is it for me?
Successful applicants are motivated students with a good first degree in a relevant subject (typically science, technology, engineering or mathematics), good english language skills, and preferably at least two years of industrial experience.
