Industrial Advisory Board

The main role of the Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) is to advise the department on how well the content in the education and training activities of the Centre matches with the expectations and needs of industry. The activity of the IAB is intended to assist in ensuring the relevance and increasing the effectiveness of the Centre’s work including its research portfolio.

The IAB is composed of both industrial and academic members. The industrial members represent a range of sectors and include the current chair of the UK Chapter of the International Council on Systems Engineering.

Short bio

Ian Alston Ian is head of Engineering Process Improvement at Leonardo where he is responsible for the definition and improvement of the Engineering Capability of the company and embedding a Systems Thinking culture. Ian is also a Chief Technical Specialist in Systems Engineering and in addition to sharing his knowledge within Leonardo supports a number of INCOSE UK working groups (Organisational Capability & Human Centric Systems Engineering) and the INCOSE International Conference as a Subject Matter Expert Reviewer.
Shane Bennison Shane is Engineering Director at Boeing Defence UK, joining the company in 2010 to oversee and manage BDUK engineers across the UK at over 20 sites. Shane specialised in Electronic Systems as an RAF Officer.  He subsequently joined Ultra Electronics Ltd, Command and Control Systems, where he was responsible for concept development, design and certification, of products and systems for Land, Sea, Air and Nuclear applications. Shane is a graduate of Lancaster University and holds a Master’s Degree from Cranfield University. He is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology and the Royal Aeronautical Society. 
Paulo Bianco Paulo manages Global Research & Technology Cooperation at Airbus Defence and Space and has 20 years of involvement in the space sector. Paulo has experience in Systems Engineering and Project Management roles across the full lifecycle. Paulo has a MSc degree in thermal power from Cranfield University and a Laurea degree in aerospace engineering from Politecnico di Torino.
Richard Candler Richard is a Senior Chief Engineer within Jaguar Land Rover leading the Vehicle Integration function for all new JLR vehicles & architectures from advanced engineering through to vehicle delivery. Richard is a champion within the organisation driving the application of systems engineering.
Kuldeep Gharatya Kuldeep Gharatya is Head of Technical Strategy, Systems Performance & Innovation at London Underground. Assuming this role in 2014, he leads the Systems Group comprising of Systems Engineering, Project Engineering, Telecommunication, Command & Control Systems, System Performance Engineering and more recently the TfL Technology Innovation initiative. Kuldeep is accountable for the delivery of the London Underground Engineering Strategy and is an advocate for innovation. Kuldeep is an alumnus of the UCL Centre for Systems Engineering.
Will Gibby Will is the Technical Director for MAATS Tech Ltd, a marine engineering consultancy experienced in special ship design for newbuild or conversion of specialist offshore vessels in subsea construction, diving, cable laying and flexible and rigid pipe laying. Will is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Will is an alumnus of the UCL Centre for Systems Engineering
Alan Harding Alan is the Head of the Information Systems Engineering Discipline for the BAE Systems Military Air and Information business, and a BAE Systems Global Engineering Fellow. Alan is the President of the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE), the global professional society for systems engineering. Alan’s specialist interest areas include capability, systems-of-systems, competency development and architecture. Alan is Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the IET.
Ivan MacTaggart Ivan is the 2016-2018 President of the UK Chapter of the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE). Ivan specialises in development and delivery of Engineering Capability, Systems Engineering and Lifecycle Management with over 25 years’ experience across a range of industries. He currently leads Product Line definition and strategy for MBDA UK and is also a member of the IET and the Engineering Council’s Quality Assurance Committee.
Alex Richards Alex is one of PA Consulting's leading experts in defining and delivering large complex technology-enabled transformation programmes. Alex is a Fellow of the IET, Fellow of the BCS and a Chartered Engineer. He has responsibility for PA's ST&E Academy, partnered with University College London, to deliver PA's post graduate development programme. He also leads one of the courses in PA's Business Design: Developing Experts Programme with Henley Business School at Reading University.
Mike Wilkinson Mike is the Technical Director of Niteworks, a broad MOD/Industry partnership focused on the collaborative solution of systems problems in Defence. He is a past President of the INCOSE UK Chapter, is co-chair of the INCOSE UK Chapter’s Architecture Working Group and chair of the INCOSE International Architecture Working Group. Within Atkins, he is a Technical Director in the Defence Business Unit and was Chair of the Atkins Systems Technical Network.
