- Research Associate (Mrsic-Flogel Lab)
-
The Mrsic-Flogel lab aims to understand the fundamental principles of neural circuit organization and how this organization relates to the computations that support sensory and behavioural function. The lab approaches this by recording activity in identified neurons in large ensembles to uncover the computations taking place during sensory processing and sensory-guided behaviours, and understanding how these computations arise from the neural hardware: from the synaptic interactions between identified cell types that differ in the patterns of input and output connectivity.
SWC is now looking for an outstanding researcher to work in Tom Mrsic-Flogel’s laboratory on computational analysis of neocortical population activity during goal directed behaviour. You’ll lead on the project, designing and implementing experiments and working collaboratively with other members of the lab to achieve the aims of the project and produce publications and presentations on your research.
You will have a PhD in Neuroscience or a related field, and independent research experience with a track record of publications and completed research projects. You’ll be experienced with optogenetics, optical or electrophysiological recordings in vivo and behavioural neuroscience relevant to cerebral cortex. Demonstrable skill in the design and control of complex behavioural assays that involve collection of neural population data is essential, as is competence in advanced techniques of neural data analysis, particularly spike sorting and analyses of large scale datasets of neural population activity.
The post is funded for two years in the first instance.
The role is full time, with a salary of £34,635 - £41,864 per annum inclusive of London Allowance, dependent on experience.

- Research and Innovation Engineer
-
The SWC Fabrication Laboratories (FabLabs) support and accelerate innovative scientific research through the design, development and deployment of new research instruments. The FabLabs provide multi-disciplinary engineering expertise, enabling assessment of scientific and technical requirements, proposal and development of engineered solutions. A high level of investment in the FabLab facilities has equipped them with state-of-the-art design and manufacturing technologies for the rapid prototyping of electronic, 3D printed, fluidic and precision machined parts.
Our Research and Innovation team performs highly skilled precision work in design, development, construction, assembly, and validation of a wide variety of scientific instruments and experimental equipment. You will collaborate with and assist scientists and other engineers with project specification, and translate concepts and ideas into prototypes and formally-designed laboratory equipment.
You will need to be an innovative thinker, able to demonstrate positive outcomes from the implementation of your ideas, and be able to provide new and creative solutions to problems. You will take a collaborative approach to your work, and enjoy discussing complex, multidisciplinary projects and assignments with scientists and fellow engineers. An experienced mechatronics engineer, you will have a range of technical skills, including experience with mechanical CAD, numerical modelling of mechanical systems, microcontroller and single board computer based system development, and extensive experience with sensors and actuators.
The post is funded until 31 July 2019 in the first instance with the prospect of continuation in line with the Centre’s funding renewals.
The role is full-time, with a salary of £43,023 - £50,753 per annum inclusive of London Allowance, dependent on experience.

- Research Technician (Histology and Virology)
-
The Sainsbury Wellcome Centre (SWC) commenced research operations in Spring 2016 bringing together world-leading scientists to investigate how brain circuits process information to generate perception, form memories and guide behaviour. Developed through the vision and partnership of the Gatsby Charitable Foundation and Wellcome, and with substantial investment from these partners, the mission of SWC is to generate and test experimentally tractable theories of brain function.
We are now recruiting two new technicians to support our research laboratories, one to be responsible for histology and one responsible for virology.
You will be responsible for the maintenance and running of the shared histology or virology laboratory facilities at SWC, which will include managing and allocating the workload and maintaining equipment and lab supplies. You will train, supervise and assist SWC staff, students and visitors with histological/immunocytochemical or virological techniques and be responsible for record keeping and maintaining accurate and up-to-date data in shared central databases. You will also set up and perform experiments in close collaboration with scientific colleagues in the research groups, as well as prepare and present findings of research activity at scientific meetings.
You will have a Home Office personal licence, experience of working within a research laboratory and substantial practical experience and knowledge of either histology or virology. Experience of teaching or training others in histology or virology techniques in a laboratory setting is essential, as are excellent communication and interpersonal skills the ability to use your own initiative and proactively solve problems. Prior experience of laboratory management and an understanding of neurodegenerative diseases or experience in the field of neuroscience is desirable.
If you are interested in the histology post you will also need to have experience of conforcal microscopy, slide scanning and cardiac profusion. If you are interested in the virology post you will need experience of stereotaxic surgery.
The posts are funded until 31 July 2021 in the first instance.
