The
UCL Institute of Orthopaedics and Musculoskeletal Science (IOMS), within the
UCL Division of Surgery & Interventional Science, UCL Faculty of
Medical Science teaches a number of courses to undergraduate and
postgraduate students. IOMS offers an IBSc in Orthopaedic Science for
UCL medical students in their third year. IOMS has two
post graduate taught courses, the MSc in Musculoskeletal Science which
is offered on a full time, flexible and distance learning basis and an
MSc in Trauma and Orthopaedics which combines with the existing NE
London Higher Surgical Training programme. Both
of these courses combine teaching and research.
IOMS has started a Doc ORTH programme (Professional Doctorate in Orthopaedics) which is designed to train the next generation of academic orthopaedic surgeons. This programme brings together all three elements of training under one professional doctoral programme:
- A taught element
- A reflective clinical competence
- High quality research.
It complements clinical training, up-regulating the scientific
and ORIGINAL research content. Combined with the existing
Higher Surgical Training programme, this course offers students both an
excellent preparation for FRCS (Orth) and a doctorate with an original
research element. In addition to these courses IOMS offers postgraduate research programmes
offering students an MPhil/PhD programme and an MD (Res) programme both full time and part time
