Research Department of Surgical Biotechnology

The Research Department of Surgical Biotechnology brings together globally recognised scientists, academic clinicians, and research facilitators to develop innovative technologies and translate them into clinical practice.

About us

Our portfolio of platform technologies includes the manufacture of biomaterials, biological applications of nanotechnology, and tissue engineering, with applications to the clinic enabled by evidence-based healthcare and clinical trials. Our aim is to drive uptake of innovative treatments and improve surgical practice to enhance patient benefit.

We are located at the Royal Free London NHS Trust in Hampstead, North London, and embedded within clinical centres of excellence. The mixture of UCL and NHS staff fosters close research links, based on strong scientific expertise aligned to clinical strengths. The emphasis is on translational outcomes.

Our work

We have international expertise in Biomaterials, Tissue Engineering for Regeneration, Transplantation Sciences, Vascular and Reconstructive Surgery, Nanomedicine and Solid Cancer Theranostics. Our centres describe bench-to-clinic pathways based on our major research streams.
