Melissa Bovis Hosts Nanotechnology Workshop at Science Museum Lates

9 April 2014

UCL at Science Museum Lates

Melissa Bovis, Research Associate and part-time PhD student, hosted a Nanotechnology workshop last month as part of the hugely popular Science Museum Lates, themed ‘Biorevolution’, in collaboration with the new Francis Crick Institute.

The Science Museum Lates is a free, adult only event that takes place after hours in the museum on the last Wednesday of every month.  February’s Lates saw mass collaborations between all partners of The Crick Institute, including UCL, allowing visitors to explore over fifty different workshops, whilst enjoying the usual science shows, pub quiz, Punk Science comedy shows and silent disco (underneath real space rockets).

Melissa and her team of ‘Nanonerds’ devised and hosted a Nanotechnology workshop featuring a giant red blood cell and life-sized, interactive games of ‘Tic Tac Toe’ and ‘Play Your Cards Right’ to demonstrate the size and scale of ‘nano’ to audience members, whilst also setting a myth busting exercise encouraging participants to distinguish between science fact and what currently remains science fiction in the world of nanotechnology.  Melissa told us, ‘The entire experience was immensely rewarding and overwhelming; we were all staggered by the level of enthusiasm, genuine scientific interest and the huge audience demographic’.  The record-breaking evening saw nearly 7000 people through the museum doors on the night.

Two groups from other UCL Faculties took part in the Lates event at the Science Museum, Dr Cathy Slack (Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment) and Ms Catherine Evans (Centre for Rheumatology).
