Philosophy of Science Workshops

(UCL Graduate School)

These workshops are open to students from all disciplines, but they are especially designed for those engaged in scientific research who would like to have an opportunity to reflect on the aims and methods of science more systematically than they can in the course of their usual work. Abstract and general philosophical concepts will be discussed, but always in relation to concrete situations, taken both from the history of science and your own experience of research and learning in science. Individual sessions cover:

  1. What does it mean to be "scientific"? Critique vs. orthodoxy
  2. The confirmation of theories: dilemmas and paradoxes
  3. The epistemology of measurement
  4. Is your theory only a model? Realism vs. instrumentalism
  5. Revolutions in science
