Preparing to start your degree

Planning your arrival

We want to ensure your arrival is smooth, you find accommodation, and you get ready for your degree.

The MSc Programme tutor is the first point of contact should you experience difficulties, or have any questions, before your arrival.

Dr Bill MacLehose (email).

Although UCL does not generally provide accommodation to students at the postgraduate level, the University of London provides a useful resource for those of you who have not yet sorted out where you will be living.

General information

Many of the general questions you might have about course operations can be answered using information on this website. See the UCL website for more general information for UCL students. There's also information here on specific resources for graduate students.

STS preparatory reading list

Last year STS staff prepared a list of work we think is central to MSc-level education in our fields.

This doesn’t list everything one might want to read in a subject, but it’s meant to be a good start. We'll be updating this over the summer.

It samples from the library of work we regularly use in our programme. In preparation for your studies, you should read some of these.

Let us especially encourage you to read across all categories. These lines are drawn arbitrarily, and your degree will make good use of interdisciplinary connections.

Induction week

STS organises a week of events as part of your induction to the programme. This is the week 28 Sept -2 October 2015.

During our induction week, you'll meet the staff, your fellow students, tour the facilities, and receive a variety of materials useful for study. We also plan social activities as part of the week. By the end of the week, you should be settling into the programme.
