Material Histories of Chemistry

Dr Simon Werrett organized a one-day workshop at UCL on December 14, 2013, on the history of material culture and chemistry, circa 1760-1840. Participants explored the circulation of materials, recycling, and 'cheap chemistry' in the age of the Chemical Revolution. This was the first meeting of a research cluster attached to the project "Situating Chemistry 1760-1840", being run from the University of Twente in the Netherlands. A full report on the meeting will appear on the Situating Chemistry website soon.

Prize winning dissertation

Mr Thomas Frankel, a student in STS's integrated BSc programme for UCL Medical School, has won the HAB Simons Prize 2013 for an outstanding dissertation. His dissertation focused on philosophy of science,"Prediction, Explanation, and 'Self-Caused Explanations'". Abstract below. As the award letter explained, "Only the best iBSc projects are nominated for this prize..." Thomas shares it with a student on another integrated programme.
