Research Activities

My research embraces issues in public understanding of science as well as history of science. My big project over recent years has been a biography of the cosmologist and populariser Fred Hoyle, whose career is fertile ground for the exploration of many issues in STS. I have recently published papers on the history of public understanding of science; Fred Hoyle's 'life from space' theory; and long-term trends in science journalism (with Martin Bauer of LSE).

I am also working with Brain Balmer and Matt Godwin on the history of the 'brain drain' debate. I am now working on a textbook about science and the mass media, and I am editor of, and contributor to, a collection of research papers on the career of the pioneering science wrtier and critic, J.G.Crowther.
