The Myth of the Boiling Point / Hasok Chang

Henry Cavendish

Henry Cavendish (1731-1810), the reclusive aristocrat and devoted scientist, was once described by Jean-Baptiste Biot as "the wisest of the rich and the richest of the wise" (quoted in Jungnickel and McCormmach 1999, 1). Cavendish was a grandson of William Cavendish, the Second Duke of Devonshire, and Rachel Russell; his mother was Anne de Grey, daughter of Henry de Grey, Duke of Kent. See Jungnickel and McCormmach 1999, 736-737, for the Cavendish and Grey family trees.
