UCL STROKE RESEARCH CENTRE

UCL Stroke Research Centre is an internationally recognised leader in the field of clinical stroke research. We are dedicated to doing cutting-edge research to improve the care of people with stroke. We work in close partnership with UCL Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Comprehensive Stroke Service, which is home to an Emergency Stroke Unit,  Hyperacute Stroke Unit and Research Centre, and an Acute Stroke Unit. Our research strengths include:

  • observational studies in stroke prevention, advanced neuroimaging, carotid artery disease, small vessel disease and intracerebral haemorrhage, and neurorehabilitation
  • links between infection and inflammation and stroke, including the consequences of  COVID-19, HIV, varicella and other viruses
  • assessment and understanding of the cognitive and psychological consequences of stroke
  • complex modelling
  • randomised controlled trials in acute stroke and stroke prevention including carotid artery disease, small vessel disease and intracerebral haemorrhage, and anticoagulation
  • neuroscience-based mechanistic and applied studies of neurorehabilitation in cognitive and motor domains
  • innovative clinical stroke pathways for diagnosis, treatment and follow-up
  • vascular neurosurgical research with a focus on intracranial and subarachnoid haemorrhage

We aim to offer the opportunity to participate in stroke research to all of the patients treated within our service by co-ordinating a portfolio of over twenty high-quality national Institute of Health Research (NIHR) clinical trials.
