Vision
UCL believes that the Carpenters Estate offers an ideal location from which to:
- develop world-class education and research facilities to enable UCL as a leading global university to grow
- create an environment and facilities that enable UCL to partner with science, technology and institutions and act as a magnet for established businesses and start-up companies
- widen participation in higher education and recruit more students from the local area
- increase educational and job opportunities for the local community.
- provide direct benefits through the use and availability of UCL facilities e.g. libraries, ICT suites and meeting spaces
- develop high-quality architecture and public spaces that are environmentally sustainable.
UCL Stratford is not envisaged to be an east London ‘satellite’ to the Bloomsbury campus, but a new internationally recognised research-led hub, benefiting from the symbiosis of activities and endeavours across an enlarged UCL estate.
UCL Stratford is intended to be an integral part of the community and be welcoming and accessible.
It is envisaged that a central green ‘spine’ route will run through the heart of the quarter, which will connect Stratford station and town centre to the Greenway.
There will also be direct links to the Olympic Park. The quarter will create a vibrant environment for students, university staff and the wider public.
UCL will bring our world-renowned expertise in architecture and the built environment to bear in the development of the university quarter.
Central to the design will be flexibility: floorplates that can adapt to changing modes of occupation over time – reflecting the pace of change in teaching methods, technology, business and higher education.
