Carpenter's Estate boundary map

UCL has examined a number of sites across London, and Carpenters Estate is our preferred option. The Carpenters Estate represents a particularly interesting option in Stratford, east London. In 2010, Newham Council decided to carry out the comprehensive redevelopment of the Greater Carpenters Neighbourhood.

It has taken several steps to bring that about, including already rehousing many residents from the estate under a Residents’ Charter that was agreed by Newham Council in order to establish the Council’s obligations to residents.

The council wanted an outstanding new use for the site and in November 2011, UCL and Newham Council agreed that UCL could begin a process of assessing the potential to establish a new university quarter at Carpenters Estate. Read the UCL statement released at the time and the internal announcement.

Since March, we have been actively involved in the essential early technical stages of examining options for developing new facilities in London beyond UCL’s Bloomsbury base on the 23 acres of the Carpenters Estate designated by Newham Council for comprehensive redevelopment.

Under the agreement, both parties have been working to progress proposals and UCL has been developing its vision for the future of the neighbourhood. This vision was endorsed by UCL’s Council in July 2012 and subsequently approved by Newham Council’s cabinet in October 2012.

UCL and Newham Council have been engaging with residents, and other key stakeholders in Stratford and within UCL on the proposals, and this activity will be stepped up over 2013, now that the UCL proposition has been agreed by Newham Council.

UCL has established a dedicated professional project team to review the opportunity at Carpenters Estate, guided by a group of high-level academics.
