Outline scheme
UCL has developed a masterplan for reconfiguration and refurbishment of its extensive Bloomsbury estate, which will require an investment of c. £500 million over the coming 10 years. It will allow more efficient use and increase the density of use by up to 10%.
For its longer term growth, UCL proposes development at Stratford and, although plans will necessarily develop over time, current thinking proposes, over the period 2016–21, the initial provision of c. 800,000 ft² of UCL space plus c. 500,000 ft² non-UCL residential, plus public realm and landscaping.
Subsequent phases would lead to eventual provision of around 2.35 million ft² on site, and potentially further associated development in the vicinity in the longer term.
Anticipated uses
A UCL Academic Stakeholders Group has reviewed the opportunities for the Carpenters Estate site, which is comparable in size to our existing campus in Bloomsbury. They have concluded that the site could accommodate research, teaching and residential facilities for students and staff, alongside non-UCL uses including housing.
UCL envisages providing new facilities for subjects such as engineering, architecture and the built environment, medicine, population health sciences and physical sciences. It is proposed that the academic quarter will be accessible to all and an integral part of the wider community.
UCL is committed to working with local, educational, business and community partners and will provide facilities on the site to advance this aim. It is anticipated that some 200,000 ft² of partner space will be part of the initial phase.
